We see large bodies, open to cold, dispassionately bare light, like a surgeon’s scalpel in the prose. If this is the life of the flesh after death, when an inquisitive anatomist dissects a body, trying each time to solve their particular problems, but not from the desire to discover the secret animation of the whole, or rather the mechanisms of local drives and couplings as parts of a large machine. Fragmentation – a favorite technique used by the artist-is at the heart of the perception of the body as an inanimate object of desire, a kind of still life. However, with all the physiological painting, Dating back to medical anatomical atlases, depicted drugs – not “meat” – before us the fruit of fantasy on the theme of the dead-living, emptiness and alienation as the reverse side of desire and passion.
These fantasies are Frank, almost Central here is the motif of copulation, when various, often almost abstract or sterile forms are depicted, forming joints and penetrations. The result is an extended “surreal landscape” without beginning and end, with masterfully made biomorphic formations flowing into each other; the coils of veins and bunches of tendons, the folds of tissues and the articulation of bones, where clutches, opening, overlays form a monotonous series of images. In this gray-pink with dark failures in the blackness of monotony disappears every desire, on the contrary, we are present at its successive disintegration.
Perhaps it is this truth that the artist wanted to reveal to us, repeatedly demonstrating in his paintings brilliant work done – a smooth, almost miraculous surface, reminiscent of artificial synthetic material. A departure from the expressive texture of currently the natural force total spread of digital technology, easily transforming any image layout on-screen in a uniform field. Gorbunov achieves this effect through painting, sometimes even allowing himself to “carelessness” and “drips” that only set off the overall picture of the imaginary 3-D anatomy. Bad infinity is open to the outside of the fragments, long lost causal link, strung on a Central motif of this series – the motive desires of the flesh: he who is joined to the body – rather, anatomical preparations, consisting of bloodless skeins lived-wires.
